The Concrete Jungle Indians

I've been reading Dagens Nyheter for the last two days both online and at Cafe Ariman where they have the daily edition and a story was in there that caught my attention.

Its a growing trend in Europe as well as the United States to live in an urban or suburban environment and drive around in an SUV(stadsjeep). Not only is this a waste of fuel but it is also leading to a need for bigger roads to accomodate such big vehicles. Does someone who lives in say Stockholm or Miami need to drive around in a Hummer? If anyone chose to answer yes to that question then there may be something quite wrong with them. So now the younger people in the cities have started to react to what is essentially a class status symbol. Enter the Concrete Jungle Indians.

This is an unorganized gang of young people ranging in age from thirty to twenty years of age and coming from various backgrounds(though many are university educated or currently students) who have had enough of this waste. They go around at night and let the air out of the tires on any SUV they can find in the city of Stockholm. Then once the task is complete they put a note on the window letting the driver know who is responsible for his flat tires and why he shouldn't be driving an SUV in the first place. Bravo! Down with the upper middle class and their consumerist excesses! Take the Subway instead and read a book, its a great way to skip this rush hour madness. Don't have a subway or good public transport? Start voting for someone who believes in it and doesn't have a career in oil in the family history.

Oh my.

As one indian (tomahawk in the back kind, not the dot on the forehead kind) to those concrete ones, I leave you with some good words.

It's better to burn wagons than to fade away! (with apologies to Neil Young)
